Romance Webtoon Recommendations With Great Art and Storylines
If you are an avid webtoon reader like I am, you’re probably familiar with the popular webtoon turned TV series, True Beauty.
Or if you’re just starting, True Beauty is perfect for you.
At first, True Beauty was the only webtoon I read, but soon I expanded my horizons and started peeking at some other ones and was pleasantly surprised at the myriad of amazing webtoons out there especially in the romance genre.
Here are some romance webtoons that have great art and storylines for you to read:
Madame Outlaw
Genres/Categories
Adventure, Mystery, Romance, Historical fiction
Trigger Warnings for madame Outlaw
Attempted assault and murder, gun violence, kidnapping
Synopsis
Estelle marries Thaddeus, a close friend of her brother, Isaac. But only she knows that Thaddeus killed Isaac. On the night of their wedding, she steals Thaddeus’s map of the Oregon Trail and embarks on a treacherous journey with a stable boy and a runaway slave, to the West.
However, Thaddeus will do anything to bring her back.
My Thoughts on Madame Outlaw
Techincally this is a high-action webtoon. But Madame Outlaw has a deliciously sweet romance that I’m sure you will love. When it comes to action, mystery, or adventure webtoons, the first thing I look for is chaos. For me, the amount of chaos in this genre of a webtoon is directly proportional to my love for it.
Madame Outlaw does not disappoint in this aspect. The first chapter begins with Estelle transforming from a seemingly-submissive bride to a runaway bride.
The best part: she’s not alone in this journey. She’s joined by a gaggle of eccentric (and diverse!) characters, each with their own agenda. By the end of the webtoon, it becomes a found family of sorts.
If you seek a webtoon brimming with mayhem, mayhem, and more mayhem, then Madame Outlaw is perfect for you. That it has romance is just icing on an already decadent cake.
A Summer Night’s Dream
Genres/Categories
Supernatural, Romance
Trigger Warnings
Death, Mental health issues
Synopsis
Have you ever wondered if the person you like is dreaming about you?
Teacher Yeoreum Han doesn’t have to guess — she can make it happen, with her ability to walk into other people’s dreams.
She can even link the dreams of two people together, and use this ability to play Cupid for her students. But her matchmaking goes awry when she enters the dream of Si-u Park — a lucid dreamer, who realizes that Yeoreum is walking into his dream.
Si-u and Yeoreum’s lives become intertwined after this incident, weaving a tangled web of love, friendship, and dreamers at Hanseo High.
My Thoughts on A Summer Night’s Dream
As soon I saw that the female protagonist of A Summer Night’s Dream can walk into dreams, I was hooked. And to use this power for good made me fall in love with her immediately.
Plus, the male lead is a cinnamon roll. It’s very rare for me to root for another love interest (second-lead syndrome is super prevalent in A Summer Night’s Dream) too, but I do it here which says a lot about the story. The webtoon focuses on interpersonal relationships in a very realistic way and I loved that.
A Summer Night’s Dream is one of those webtoons that’s predictable in a good way. However, it should be noted that there’s a few dark moments at the end.
Mystical
Genres/Categories
Supernatural, Romance
Trigger Warnings
Death
Synopsis
Garam has always loved to draw, but his dreams of being an artist have been on hold ever since his mother passed away.
Wanting to become more independent and focus on his art, he moves into his grandmother’s empty house by the ocean.
There, he meets his greatest muse: a mystical water creature with no memories of her past. Now it’s up to Garam to help her uncover what she has forgotten.
My Thoughts on Mystical
The only fantasy webtoon that made me cry: Mystical
Mystical is the most beautiful, most intricate webtoon I’ve ever read.
Foreshadowing, romance, a high-stakes environment, uncertainty, humor—these are the ingredients making this webtoon one of my most recommended ones.
If you need a happy cry, read Mystical. If you want to swoon, read Mystical. If you want to laugh, read Mystical.
Have I mentioned that literal fireworks come out of the female protagonists head?
Yup, just read it.
Brass And Sass
Genres/Categories
YA Contemporary Romance
Synopsis
It may have been the music that attracted her to band class, but it was love that made her stay…even if she doesn’t have any musical talent whatsoever. But what high schooler Camilla lacks in ability, she makes up for in passion – especially when it comes to Victor, the handsome musician who’s caught her eye. Will love rule the day, even when your crush of choice is a real brass-hole? Read on to find out!
My Thoughts on Brass and Sass
I’m a lover of music, so anything band or musical-related, I will read.
Brass and Sass was a light, heartwarming read, and it had LGBT representation. This was a pleasant surprise because you don’t see much of that in webtoons that aren’t solely BL or FL, and especially in ones set in high school.
There’s also so much to say about its relatability. All the characters have their story shared. They’re all dealing with their problems, be it talking to parents about their relationships, their future careers, and much more.
Brass and Sass has one of the most accurate representations of high-school. The characters, especially the female protagonist, is super lovable. And the plot and the romance is super heartwarming.
Edith
Genres/Categories
Adult, Romance, Psychological
Trigger Warnings
Smoking, alcoholism, body shaming, mental health issues
Synopsis
Edith is not your typical heroine. She struggles with her confidence, her morals, and life in general by not only holding herself to high standards but her men as well.
Enter two less-than-perfect men: one who may be the Prince Charming she’s been waiting for to deliver a fairy tale ending, the other a brash reality check who does NOT believe in happily-ever-after. What will Edith do?
Will she sacrifice her standards? Or keep searching for that mythical white knight who may or may not exist in the first place? Funny, messy and sexy, Edith’s journey is relatable to anyone who’s ever left their heart on the battlefield of the dating world.
My Thoughts on edith
I loved this webtoon because the female lead, Edith, had a remarkable character arc.
The journey from a woman seeking validation to a confident, self-accepting woman is truly inspiring, and sometimes even envious.
And the art style was incredibly expressive and glowy. This one can get pretty psychological at times.
Unfortunately, the romance I was rooting for didn’t survive but I guess that was part of Edith’s self-love arc. She does fall in love with someone else later (and someone very unexpected!) though.
While I wasn’t particularly pleased with the turn it took with the romance, I found the rest really interesting—it was like a healing webtoon for me.
The Kiss Bet
Genres/Categories
YA, Contemporary Romance
Trigger Warnings
Parental death, divorce.
Synopsis
It’s senior year and Sara Lin just turned 18. She’s got great friends, a cool Dad (or so he thinks) and a lot ahead of her. The last thing she needs is to worry about having her first kiss. But that’s all about to change because her good pal Patrick just challenged her to a bet that will either lead to love, heartbreak or embarrassment…or maybe all three.
My Thoughts on The Kiss bet
Mature high school characters, an actually lovable popular girl, bathroom therapy sessions with a teenage psychic, fathers that aren’t overbearing, and Michael Jackson’s ghost?!
The Kiss Bet is a literary and artistic bonanza.
It’s not a completed webtoon. If you’ve read my other blog posts, you know I read only completed webtoons (I’m patient, but not that patient). But The Kiss Bet is worth the weekly waits.
I’m excited to see how things turn out with Sara Lin and “Subway Boy“.
Romance 101
Genres/Categories
New Adult, Romance, Drama
Synopsis
Bareum’s planner might be full, but one thing she desperately needs in her diary is a date. When she is lured into joining a programming club by her friend’s hot coworker, it looks like there might be hope for her. But will her inexperience lead to her downfall? And why does she keep running into his bad-tempered friend instead?
My Thoughts on Romance 101
Romance 101 is my comfort webtoon. It has about the same effect on me that a snuggling under a fluffy blanket with a hot cup of tea does.
Romance 101 a must-read for anyone looking for a sweet college romance and a storyline that is so hilarious, you will roll.
Plus, Romance 101 has a lot of insight about being a perfectionist, and about being in a relationship with someone who has completely opposite traits. If you’re in a somewhat similar situation, I guarantee you Romance 101 will be a fun way to gain valuable knowledge.
