Movie recs for fans of love and gelato

Movie Recommendations for Fans of Love and Gelato

Love and Gelato is one of my favorite YA novels ever!

Jenna Evans Welch has also gifted us with two other novels following similar storylines: Love and Luck, and Love and Olives each brewing their own magic.

The moment I finished watching the movie based on the book, I was completely captivated and craving more.

Ever since I’ve been on the lookout for films that give you all the feels, just as Love and Gelato does.

PS: Although not all involve travel or a quest to finding a parent, these movies are still absolutely incredible.

PPS: I’m going to put my favorite quotes from the movies underneath. Because why not?

Leap Year

“I don’t want to not make plans with you. I want to make plans with you.”

Anna, played by the incredibly skilled Amy Adams, decides to take control of her situation after enduring numerous anniversaries without a marriage proposal from her boyfriend.

With knowledge of the Celtic tradition that allows women to propose on February 29th, she plans to surprise her partner in Dublin and ask for his hand in marriage. However, fate intervenes, and Anna finds herself stranded far away from Dublin, leaving her with no option but to seek assistance from Declan, a striking yet grumpy Irishman.

Special appearance – Louie, the suitcase.

Monte Carlo

“I finally meet a guy who likes me for me, and I’m not even me.”

The promise of Paris was the only thing that kept Grace going. Travelling with her trusted friend Emma had always been her dream.

Grace is left disappointed when she finds out that her stepsister is obliged to accompany them. What’s even more frustrating is that plans in Paris don’t seem to pan out.

When Grace is mistakenly identified as a British heiress, the trio embarks on an enchanting adventure in Monte Carlo balancing charity functions and romance, as they try to hide their true identities.

Letters to Juliet

“What and If are two words as non-threatening as words can be. But put them together side-by-side and they have the power to haunt you for the rest of your life.”

During her trip to Verona, Italy, with her busy fiancé, a young woman named Sophie takes time to visit a wall where people leave notes to express their heartbreaks to Shakespeare’s tragic heroine, Juliet.

Sophie, upon discovering a letter dated back to 1957 about a heartbraking romance makes the decision to reach out to its writer, Claire. Motivated by Sophie’s actions, Claire embarks on a quest to find her lost love with her disapproving grandson and Sophie by her side.

Along for the Ride

“Life is long, Auden. It’d be pretty boring if we had to stay the same versions of ourselves the whole time.”

During the summer before starting college, Auden, who comes from a broken family, embarks on a journey to meet her father and stepmother at Colby.

There, Auden meets Eli, who has experienced a tragic accident that took his best friend. They both suffer from insomnia, but together they find solace.

As the town sleeps, they set out on nightly adventures, introducing Auden to a world she never knew she desired – a life filled with joy and freedom and ever-lasting friends.

The Broken Hearts Gallery

“Heartbreak is the loneliest, most isolating feeling in the world. And the truth is, it happens to us all. It is the great equalizer.”

Lucy, a young adult living in New York City, collects souvenirs from her relationships. When she goes through a unexpected, crushing breakup with her partner she manages to transform this pain and unwittingly creates an art gallery.

An art gallery that exhibits keepsakes from broken-hearted people.

The Last Letter from Your Lover

“I don’t think being afraid to try is a good enough reason for anything.”

This film, adapted from the homonymous novel, portrays the intertwined love stories of two women, Ellie and Jennifer, residing in London during distinct periods.

In 2003, Ellie, a journalist, stumbles upon a collection of love letters while conducting research about the 1960s.

Jennifer’s story unfolds through the letters, revealing her passionate romance with Anthony, a foreign correspondent struggling with his personal demons.

The wealthy industrialist, Jennifer’s husband, is unaware of the illicit affair, adding an element of secrecy and danger to their intense relationship. Despite their love, circumstances prevent them from getting together.

Using the letters, Ellie tracks down Jennifer and Anthony in hopes of reuniting them.

What A Girl Wants

Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you are born to stand out?

With sudden determination, Daphne decides to take a flight to England in search of the father she has never known.

However, when she arrives, she discovers something shocking: the person she is looking for is none other than Lord Henry Dashwood, a noble British citizen who is competing for a prestigious government position. He had not known about Daphne’s existence, but he welcomes her into his life.

Her father’s family disapproves, and she is faced with a choice: to leave or confront her father and risk causing a scandal.
